Abstract:
Beginning in approximately July of 2008, the West Virginia GIS Technical Center began receiving and scanning Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps from the West Virginia University Downtown Library Regional and Historic Collection for the purposes of digital archiving. The maps range in date from late 19th Century to early 20th Century, and cover a wide breadth of towns and cities within West Virginia.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to provide digital archiving of historic, fragile, and otherwise sensitive map documents so that they are not further degraded by continued use by public or private interests.
