Abstract:

A full 55-county set of roadway maps published in 1933 by the West Virginia State Road Commission was obtained from the West Virginia Department of Highways by the West Virginia GIS Technical Center with the intent to scan for preservation and georeferencing. All maps were scanned at an optical resolution of 600dpi and using an 8-bit color palette. 49 county maps were scanned at the WV GIS Technical Center, while 6 were outsourced to a third-party for scanning due to physical size constraints. The outsourced county maps include: Greenbrier, Kanawha, Nicholas, Pendleton, Pocahontas, and Randolph counties. For the purposes of georeferencing, maps were downsampled to an optical resolution of 300dpi and to a bi-level color scheme in an effort to maximize portability. Datasets used in georeferencing the 1933 maps include: 2008 Census TIGER Line roads vector data, 2007 NAIP 1-m Spatial Resolution Color-Infrared Imagery, and 24k County Boundary vector data. All georeferencing was performed with NAD83 Datum and UTM Zone 17N Projection.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to preserve historic map content and make available digitally archival maps from the West Virginia Department of Highways.
