  Description:
Abstract: The MNF trails network was created as part of a standard forest-wide data set. A digital version of the forest trail network that conforms to the national standard is a required layer for forest planners.
Purpose: This data set provides a routed trail network that conforms to the national standards and is provided as a management tool for the forest. The coverage conforms to national map accuracy standards (NMAS) at the 1:24000 scale as identified by the U.S. Geological Survey.

    Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
All Attributes entered during the cfreation process were
verified by displaying the lines in both the database and
spatial coverage, but no formal tests were performed.
  Logical_Consistency_Report:
These data are believed to be logically consistent, though
no tests were performed. Line geometry is topologically clean.
  Completeness_Report:
Contains trails from cartographic feature files, digital
ortho quarter quads, USGS topographic maps, heads up
     digitizing and GPS data.
  Positional_Accuracy:
    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
      Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The horizonla position of accuracy of the CFF reflects the
nature of the source PBS map. PBS maps are compiled to meet
National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). For the horizonal
componet, the NMAS states that 90 percent of well-defined
points on a map fall within the specified distance of the
actual position on the ground-- 1/50th of an inch at map
scale for 1:24000- and 1:63360-scale. CFFs are estimated to
contain a horizonal position accuracy of less than or equal
to 0.005 inches in one direction relative to the source
graphic. The source graphic is used to assess digital
                position accuracy.
    Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
      Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
This data was created by using a USGS 7.5 minute
Topographic Map at 1:24000 scale to delineate the linework.
Therefore, the vertical accuracy is assumed to be within
National Map Accuracy Standards. For the vertical
component, The NMAS states that 90 percent of well defined
points on a map fall within a specified distance of the
actual elevation (1/2 of the contour interval or 10-20 feet).

    Process_Step:
      Process_Description:
The cartographic feature file was aquired from the Geospatial Service and Technology Center (GSTC) and
imported into Arcinfo. All trails were extracted and a printed map was given to the Recreation Staff. The
Recreation Staff edited the map and it was returned to the GIS group where the digital file was edited to reflect the
updates. The corrections were made by heads up digitizing (HUD) using the primary base series of maps and digital orthophotography as a backdrop. As the forest acquired GPS units, recreation technicians GPS'd trails. This early trail work wasn't done to a formal standard and no data dictionary had been established. These trails received an origin code of either GP1 or GS4 based on their known positional accuracy with GP1 being more accurate. As the quality of receivers improved and a data dictionary and standards were implemented, all further GPS work is well documented and receives an origin code of GPS. In July, 2005 a review of the trails layer was undertaken and using more current GPS data along with higher resolution orthophotography, corrections were made to the layer and the attribute table was expanded to better serve forest users.
